(The Bulletin) – One week out and just about all election races should be completed by now. And the winners.
For the City of Compton, the choices were crystal clear with a little bit of angst. As of right now, Mayor Emma Sharif (41 percent) has a clear-cut lead over runner-up Andre Spicer, who surrendered his Second District council seat to challenge the incumbent.
According to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office, Spicer’s tally is way shorter than Sharif. Spicer has 18 percent of the vote.
With Sharif not able to achieve the majority threshold for votes, it appears that the race for mayor will come down to a runoff between her and Spicer.
Jonathan Bowers (51 percent) has a slight edge over Randall Hook (48 percent) in the Third District race. Satra Zurita is dominating her race for the city clerk’s position with just over 63 percent of the vote.
Lynn Boone is a not-so-close second place with 36% of the vote. Brandon Mims is trying to hold on to his job as city treasurer. Mims has nearly 59 percent of the vote (58.9) of the vote, while challenger Maxwell Burke is behind with 41 percent. It could be weeks before a final determination can be made from all of these election races.
In the Second District race, Bennie Tinson is ahead of Anthony Perry. For the Compton Unified School District, a couple of seats appear to be clear-cut. Alma Taylor Pleasant (66 percent) has a distinct advantage over Tonya Craft-Perry (33 percent) for the board’s Trustee Area E seat. For the district’s Trustee Area B seat, Tanya L. McCoy (55 percent to 44 percent) has a comfortable lead over Mae Thomas.
The big deal for the district \is whether or not residents would be behind a measure to support funding for a new Dominguez High School. So far, the outlook appears to be great. Right now, Measure CPT has 57 percent in favor of and a 43 percent against the measure to pass.
