The Bulletin pays homage to the game-changers and movers and shakers in Compton. This week we honor educator Trenae Cobbs-Walker, Centennial High School, Compton
Trenae Cobbs-Walker is known to be an exceptional educator at Centennial High School. The Bulletin, along with Compton City Clerk Satra Zurita, would like to salute Ms. Cobbs-Walker during Women’s History Month.
While many teachers shape minds within the classroom, she goes far beyond traditional instruction to create transformative, real-world learning experiences for her students.
Deeply committed to providing not only a safe and supportive educational environment but also meaningful civic engagement opportunities, she recently organized one of the most impactful hands-on civics initiatives our students have experienced.
After independently reaching out to the Secretary of State’s office, she coordinated a full-scale mock election and voter registration experience for Centennial students.
She transformed the school gymnasium into a functioning polling place, secured mock ballots, and structured the event as a schoolwide assembly complete with cheerleaders, school pride, and educational programming focused on the importance of civic participation and voting.
Every student was given the opportunity to participate.
What she created was more than an event — it was a powerful, teachable life experience. Students were able to see, feel, and engage in the democratic process firsthand. In a time when civic literacy is more important than ever, she ensured that students understood not only how to vote, but why their voices matter.
Beyond academics, her commitment to student engagement extends into school culture and pride. She recently launched a tall flags unit squad, now officially part of the drill team and other performing auxiliary units, giving students yet another avenue to build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and school spirit.
Her creativity and initiative continue to open doors for students who may not otherwise see themselves reflected in traditional programs.
She is constantly developing innovative opportunities that inspire students to think critically, participate fully, and believe in their own potential.
Women’s History Month is about honoring women who empower the next generation. Through education, innovation, and leadership, Trenae Cobb’s-Walker is doing exactly that — shaping informed, confident, and civically engaged young leaders for the future.
