The Los Angeles County Public Defender partnered with City of Compton Mayor Emma Sharif to host the Independence Through Expungement Fair at the Dollarhide Community Center.
The event was designed to support residents in clearing their criminal records and reclaiming their freedom through access to expungement services and community resources.
The fair emphasized the importance of second chances, providing individuals an opportunity to remove legal barriers that hinder employment, housing, and overall quality of life. The event highlighted how restoring records is a tangible step toward independence, dignity, and self-sufficiency.
“Expungement is more than a legal remedy — it’s a pathway to independence from the criminal legal system,” said Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo García.
“By helping people move past old convictions, we eliminate a barrier in their journey to self-determination and empowerment. We’re proud to partner with the City of Compton to make this possible, because true justice must include redemption, opportunity, and the chance to rebuild without the weight of a record holding them back,” Garcia went on to say.
“In our community, resources and second chances are life-changing, and the Independence through Expungement fair opens our residents to employment, housing, and education opportunities,” said Compton Mayor Emma Sharif.
“Today represented our commitment to strengthening our city one step at a time, and we are proud to partner with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office to make this possible,” she added.
The fair featured a wide range of supportive services from LA County departments and local nonprofit organizations, including legal assistance, workforce development, health services, and community-based programs committed to helping individuals move forward.
