Welcome to the new Compton High School!

Compton, CA (The Bulletin) – Impressive. That might be the best word to describe the remake of Compton High School.

Thursday, May 22, officially marked the birthday of the new Compton High School. With a lot of fanfare, a marching band, a gallery of dignitaries, and the presence of a living musical legend in the form of Andre “Dr. Dre,” Compton High School was back among the living.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony gave people a reason to be excited about. Well, maybe 225 million reasons why.

After the dismantling of the old edifice, Compton High School has gone through a metamorphosis stage, having exited a cryptic and outdated facility to a simple dirt placard with hopes of a better future for staff, administration, and students alike.

Those aspirations have come to full fruition with state-of-the-art everything. From the Olympic-style swimming venue to the cutting-edge technology academic center to the innovative Andre “Dr. Dre” Young Performing Arts Center, the new Compton High School will be the envy of many public schools, both locally as well as abroad.

Senior Hector Mariscal is in awe of the performing center and what it has to offer students.

“I think it’s a great opportunity, because it’s obviously something where you can come and express yourself in many different ways,” Mariscal said. “If you had any ideas of wanting to put on a show or playing music and you want to put her on stage, you can come do that, or if you just want to come here and just, you know, express yourself in many different ways.”

The price tag for the resurrected educational institution comes at a cost of $225 million. Young himself donated $10 million to help out in the erection and construction of the performing arts center, which also bears his likeness on one of the walls of the facility.

Did we mention the spanking new all-weather track and football field that is now part of the Tarbabe lore? There is so much to talk about the school that it may take about another six months to go over and discuss every nook and cranny that has been carved out to breathe life into students.

Compton High School officially welcomes students in August. The school is expected to host and educate as many as 1,800 students. Having taken a mini-tour of the school, it is safe to say that Compton High School will become a bedrock in the city and region as well as the state for many, many years to come.
