Initial results show that Compton school board member Satra Zurita is leading Vernell McDaniel in the Compton City Clerk’s race. At last count, Zurita received 55 percent of the vote from city residents, which equates to 7,931 votes compared to McDaniel.
McDaniel, an appointee, is the incumbent in the race.
With the city parlaying its election with the presidential election, McDaniel has gathered 6.452 votes or roughly 44.8 percent. In almost a dead heat, Jasper Jackson has a narrow lead over Deidre Duhart in the District 1 election race.
With a little more than half the ballots in, Jackson has tallied 1,971 votes, or 50 percent of the vote from district residents. Duhart, who was appointed to the Compton City Council, is right behind Jackson with 49 percent of district residents casting their ballots for her.

At the moment, the District 4 race appears to be a bit more conclusive with incumbent Lillie P. Darden out in front of challenger Joel Estrada. So far, Darden has a 56 percent to 43 percent lead over Estrada.
A measure before city residents asking whether or not the City Attorney position should be appointed through an amendment and those who qualify have at least a decade of municipal law experience is getting the thumbs up so far.
The “Yes” votes have a large lead with 59 percent (8,413 votes) of residents voting in favor of the measure. The “No” votes trail at 40 percent (5,727 votes).
With Sen. Steve Bradford termed out, the race for the Senate 35th District seat is a toss-up at this point with Laura Richardson leading former Compton City Councilwoman Michelle Chambers by a couple of thousand votes.
So far, Richardson has tallied 82,460 votes (51.4 percent) compared to 77,938 votes that Chambers has gathered. Rep. Nannette Diaz Barragan (68.7 percent of the vote) is on cruise control to win reelection in the 44th District against Roger Groh.
Assemblyman Mike Gipson (D-65) appears to be on his way to an easy path to victory as well with more than 68 percent of residents voting for him.
