Compton Unified School District’s (CUSD) 2024/25 Board of Trustees selected new officers at the most recent board meeting on Tuesday, April 16. Micah Ali was elected the new board president, replacing Denzell Perry.
The current slate of officers will serve a term from April 2024 until June 2025. Here is the full list of officers confirmed at the Board Meeting:
President: Micah Ali, Trustee Area C Representative
Vice President: Satra Zurita, Trustee Area G Representative
Clerk: Alma Taylor-Pleasant, Trustee Area E Representative
Legislative Representative: Ayanna E. Davis, Ed.D., Trustee Area B Representative
LA County Schools Trustees Representative: Sandra Moss, Trustee Area F Representative
Member: Denzell Perry, Trustee Area A Representative
Member: Michael Hooper, Trustee Area D Representative
The Board Officer elections were held at this meeting to coincide with the recent results of the March 5 Primary that saw Micah Ali and Sandra Moss reelected to their board positions, and Michael Hooper elected to represent Area D, replacing Charles Davis. Ali and Moss were officially sworn into their board positions prior to the board meeting.
“I am grateful that the Compton residents have reelected me to the Board for another four-year term,” said Ali. “We have made incredible strides turning around this school district, raising test scores, and increasing the graduation rates. I am also thankful to my colleagues for their confidence in my leadership through these fiscally perilous times.”
“But the work is not done yet,” he continued. “We are opening the new Compton High School in 2025, building a new Centennial High School after that, and continuing to provide better education and elevating the scholars in our District. I am excited to help guide the process on the board, and as Board President, I will continue to work tirelessly to raise this District to greater heights.”
Ali has served 17 years on the CUSD Board of Trustees and is the longest-serving president in the history of the Compton Unified School District. He helped lead a dramatic turnaround of the district’s educational outcomes as well as help pull it from the brink of state takeover (or state receivership).
The Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees represents seven trustee areas and are elected by the registered voters residing within those areas. To be eligible for election, trustees must reside in the area in which they are running for election. The area voters elect the seven Trustees on a staggered basis, such that every two years voters elect either three or four trustees.
Following those elections, the board then elects its officers at the next board meeting for a yearly term.
