Library on Wheels inspires Lynwood scholars to read

Lynwood High School students dived into the world of literature on January 17, when they had the opportunity to select free books from a curated collection brought to the campus by the nonprofit organization, The Book Truck.

Students fawned over books that featured topics ranging from fantasy and mystery to science fiction and autobiographies, including one written by former Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

“This feels amazing because my New Year’s resolution was to read more and now that I have an opportunity to get all these lovely free books at school, it makes me want to achieve my goal even more,” senior Dayqian Baker said. “Being able to relax with a new good book is something I’m grateful for.”

The Book Truck, a mobile bookstore, aims to get books directly into hands of teens who may not have easy access to libraries while empowering them to take control of their education.

“Events like this are enriching for students because they not only create a community of readers but promote literacy, reading, writing and using your imagination,” said Assistant Principal Lori Andrews, who organized the event to inspire students. “We’ve seen so much excitement from the students and I hope the students enjoy the books they chose.”

Lynwood Unified is committed to cultivating a community that values and prioritizes reading. As part of the District’s literacy initiative, efforts are particularly focused on enhancing reading and literacy skills among students from Transitional Kindergarten through third grade to ensure their success throughout their educational journeys and prepare them for achievement in college, career and beyond.
