On Nov. 22, the community of Compton showed up big for a street renaming ceremony in honor of late rapper and music mogul Eric (Eazy-E) Wright.
Wright, a central part of the hit-making group N.W.A., had an outstanding musical career and helped usher in a dynamic switch into hip-hop culture with gangsta rap. In N.W.A., Wright teamed up with Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and Mc Ren, to produce one of the more historic sounds relating to rap music.
Wright and N.W.A. were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. On hand to celebrate the moment of the street renaming were local officials such as Sen. Steven Bradford, Assemblyman Mike Gipson, members of the Compton City Council, Wright’s friends and family as well as other hip-hop artists, including Layzie Bone of Bones Thugs-N-Harmony.
