Compton announces Jerry Groomes as City Manager

COMPTON, Calif. – The City of Compton announces the appointment of Jerry Groomes as the new Interim City Manager. The Compton City Council voted to appoint Mr. Groomes into the temporary position on Tuesday, July 11. Groomes brings an impressive career of nearly four decades in local government and a proven track record of success to our city.

“My fellow City Council members and I are honored to welcome Jerry Groomes as the Interim City Manager of Compton. With his extensive experience and proven track record in public administration, we are confident that Jerry will bring invaluable expertise and leadership to our city,” said Compton Mayor Emma Sharif. “We are happy to have him serve in this crucial role and assist us in the search for a permanent City Manager. Mr. Groomes’ guidance will be instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition and continued progress for the City of Compton.”

As a seasoned Public Administrator, Jerry Groomes has made significant contributions to the communities he has served on the East and West coasts. Mr. Groomes has nearly 40 years of experience, which include previously serving as the City Manager for East Palo Alto and Carson. His expertise consulting and working in both big cities and smaller municipalities has resulted in major economic development impacts, fostering growth and prosperity for the citizens he has served.

Jerry Groomes is no stranger to Compton, having previously served as the Interim City Manager in 2016. His prior experience in city grants provide him with valuable insights into the specific needs and aspirations of the Compton community. Mr. Groomes deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that arise in local government will help him to serve in this pivotal role.

Groomes was appointed as Interim City Manager following the recent removal of former City Manager Thomas from the role. However, due to policies related to CalPERS retirement regulations, Groomes will serve in this capacity for a period of six months. During his tenure in this leadership role, Groomes will be charged with leading the search for a permanent City Manager to ensure a smooth transition and the selection of a candidate who will make a lasting impact on Compton’s future.
